Diagnosis and treatment of vitiligo (white patches) by Dr. Iftekhar Khan, MD Dermatology from AIIMS New Delhi, at Truederm, C-Scheme.
Vitiligo is a condition in which the skin loses its pigment-producing cells (melanocytes), causing white patches. It is not contagious and is not caused by food. It can appear at any age and on any part of the body. Not every white patch is vitiligo, either: fungal infections, post-inflammatory changes and other conditions can look similar, so a correct diagnosis is the first step.
Treatment depends on whether vitiligo is spreading (active) or has been unchanged for a while (stable). Active vitiligo is first controlled with medicines. Surgical treatments are considered only once patches have stayed stable.

Vitiligo can often be controlled, and many patches regain colour with treatment, especially on the face and when treatment starts early. Response varies from person to person.
No. Vitiligo does not spread from person to person through touch, food or sharing utensils.
Re-pigmentation is gradual and usually takes several months. Regular follow-up helps adjust treatment as you respond.
